DesignEgg is proud to have completed work for its first group of Award Recipients.

They are a diverse selection of artists, non-profit organizations, and entrepreneurs working in ten cities and eight states across the nation. All are making valuable contributions in one or more of the following areas: Animal Rights, Education, Environmentalism, Health & Wellness, Humanitarian Relief, Theater, Social Services, Sustainability, and Visual Arts.

OUTDOOR WOMEN’S COALITION

Boulder, CO—Founded in 1996, the Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition is the only national organization dedicated to workplace equity, diversity, and inclusion by expanding opportunities for women in the Outdoor Industries. OIWC provides professional development, education, and leadership programming that promotes women’s advancement. THE YOUTH FARM

Brooklyn, NY—The Youth Farm at High School for Public Service is an educational production farm in East Flatbush that offers New Yorkers opportunities to increase their knowledge of the food system and build high-level organic growing skills to share with their communities. The Youth Farm grows organic food and flowers on one acre for the community and beyond, and offers advanced farm training and leadership opportunities for youth and adults. theyouthfarm.org

THE COMMUNITY MONTESSORI

Columbia, MO—The Community Montessori is a nonprofit preschool that partners with parents and community members to deliver an exceptional educational experience to Columbia’s children living in poverty. Founded in 2009, the school prepares students with the academic, social, and emotional skills necessary to succeed and provides affordable childcare for families. BETWEEN FRIENDS

Chicago, IL—Since 1986, Between Friends has been dedicated to its mission of breaking the cycle of domestic violence and building a community free of abuse. The organization addresses domestic violence as an individual, family, and community issue, offering extensive counseling and court advocacy services to survivors of domestic violence, as well as prevention and education programs for youth and adults. ASSEMBLE

Detroit, MI—Assemble, a social enterprise start-up, helps small and medium businesses succeed through interactions that bring them efficiency and scale. Across the nation, local businesses are being pushed out as larger chains and e-commerce drive prices down. Assemble will help them band together to share time-tested employees and equipment so they can save money and keep their doors open. The website is currently in “beta mode” after recently being crowd-funded through RocketHub. assemblyofcommerce.com

APRIL HALE JEWELRY

Missoula, MT—April Marie Hale is a Montana-based artist making sustainable, handcrafted jewelry by combining blacksmithing, enameling, and fine silversmithing. She has been creating jewelry for over ten years and holds a Craft Certificate from the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee and a Master’s of Fine Art from Montana State University. Her process involves enameling on reclaimed copper, steel, and recycled sterling silver. Her colorful and organic work is inspired by the natural world.  aprilhalejewelry.com

LAUREN CHANDLER

Portland, OR—Lauren Chandler is a chef instructor who empowers people to reach their cooking and dietary goals, replete with a healthy dose of fun. She offers public workshops, private coaching, and chef services, and bridges the gap between the health provider’s office and the dinner plate, translating nutritional counseling into tasty results. THE LITTLE YOGA MAT

New York, NY—With their eco-friendly line of size-specific mats, The Little Yoga Mat is helping kids in homes, yoga studios, classrooms, and hospitals across the country by promoting wellness through yoga. In addition to the physical health benefits, research shows that children who practice yoga are more focused in school and better able to deal with stress. MONTANA WILDERNESS SCHOOL

Bozeman, MT—The Montana Wilderness School is a non-profit educational start-up providing multi-week, wilderness adventure courses for Montana youth. The mission of the School is to provide an empowering expeditionary experience that fosters personal growth and cultivates a conservation ethic by connecting youth with remote landscapes and wild places. Students return to their communities as more skilled, confident, and compassionate leaders.

ANDY NORTH

Chicago, IL—Andy North is a performance artist whose work explores games as physical exercise, a tool for storytelling, and an aid for interaction. He creates live experiences that allow players to inhabit stories and build connections with each other while promoting health and fitness. His work “Adventure Squad vs. the Sky Pirates” won the award for “Best Narrative” at the 2013 Come Out and Play festival in New York. Andy also produces live game shows with his company, The Planetary Defense Force.

An 8-week game-based fitness program intended to introduce fun into physical activity. Designed with the help of two personal trainers, the program combines team-based playground activities (variations on tag, dodgeball, races and simple play) with skill challenges and training structures

WOOLCRUSH

Columbia, MO—Amy Higgins Stambaugh, the fiber artist behind WOOLCRUSH, works with hand-dyed wool cultivated and harvested from plants that she grows or forages. She is currently learning the cultural and historical traditions of processing a farm fleece into yarn and fabric. Community-minded and inspired by the modern pioneering spirit, she is also the owner of a rural Missouri property, which she shares with others for community events and workshops. woolcrush.com

PHOTOSERVE

Chicago, IL—Photoserve is the vision of co-founders Tony and Katy Skarlatos and Matt and Stevi Savage. This aspiring non-profit connects partner organizations with a network of volunteers who want to exchange a meaningful cultural experience for free photographic and video services. Volunteers participate in global humanitarian efforts and document their experience—the photos/videos then become available for use by the partner organization. photoserve.org

THE SAFE HAVEN NETWORK

Chicago, IL—The Safe Haven Network is a referral service connecting domestic violence victims to emergency boarding programs for their pets. The Network is built on the idea that pets deserve to be safe from abuse as much as the rest of the family does. Through partnerships with local animal shelters, they find temporary “safe havens” where domestic violence victims can secure the well-being of their pets while they seek help for themselves.  thesafehavennetwork.org

OREGON DESERT TRAIL

Bend, OR—The Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA) exists to protect, defend and restore Oregon’s high desert. Their dream is to see millions of acres of beautiful and ecologically vital public lands permanently protected and home to diverse populations of wildlife.  The 800-mile Oregon Desert Trail traverses some of the most spectacular natural areas of the state’s dry side, including Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Steens Mountain and the Owyhee Canyonlands. onda.org

ESCALANDO FRONTERAS

Nuevo León, Mexico—Escalando Fronteras (“Climbing Borders”) is a not-for-profit organization that reaches out to at-risk youth in the “poverty polygons” of Monterrey, Mexico through the sport of rock climbing. The program takes groups of at-risk youth to the local climbing gyms and national park Parque La Huasteca with the help of local volunteers and visiting professional athletes. Durango, CO—Restoration Climbing is a grassroots initiative working to promote responsible behavior and ethics within the climbing community. Founders Sam Sommers and Becca Droz travel the nation and engage climbers in person and through social media. They champion practices of safety, health for the land and the body, social approachability, and contribution to environmental causes.

RHINO SKIN SOLUTIONS

Bend, OR—After experimenting with many products, Rhino Skin founders Justin and Andi Brown decided it was time to try and make their own. In addition to skin care, the Browns also emphasize joint and connective tissue health and have recently developed a magnesium salt-based soak. With their all-natural line of products, Rhino aims to support the health of anyone who participates in a demanding outdoor pursuit.
